My guild’s quilt show is coming up this fall, and I’m planning to make pouches and gift card holders for the guild’s Boutique.
Remember the fabric license plates from the quilt shops during the Row by Row Experience? I saw a post on Facebook by someone who had made a zippered pouch from one of her plates. (So sorry, of course I can’t find the post again, so I can’t give her credit. If you find out, let me now!) Since I have a stack of license plates, I thought I’d make pouches for the Boutique.
After I poked through my stash for a pattern, I decided to combine the elements of two different patterns to get the size and style that I wanted – a simple zippered pouch with a lining.
First, I started by putting end tabs on the zipper to the appropriate size of the pouch, then trimmed the zipper to the correct size. I added fusible fleece to the wrong side of the two outside pieces of fabric. Then I sewed the zipper right sides together with the outside pouch front (license plate).
Then sewed the zipper right sides together with the outside pouch back (complementary fabric).
I chose another complementary fabric for the lining of the pouch. Choosing a light color will help to find things inside the pouch. I sewed the right side of the fabric to the wrong side of the zipper, then pressed it back.
Next, I pinned the two outside pieces right sides together, and the two lining pieces right sides together.
I sew all the way around, leaving a gap in the lining so I can pull the fabric right sides out.
Once the piece is right sides out, I give it a good press. Then pin and sew the lining closed at the gap.
and . . . Tah Dah! A cute little pouch.
Now I have seven more to go. Not a bad day of productive sewing. 😉
These will be a fun addition to my guild’s Boutique at the show!
I’ll post again when I’m working on the card holders. TTFN
