Fun Quilt Labels!
Say goodbye to messy handwriting and fussy inkjet printing – I’ve discovered a quilt label technique that I actually love!
My secret? Having labels professionally embroidered on scrap fabric, then framing them with a complementary fabric that ties beautifully into the quilt. The result looks polished and intentional every time.
Thanks to TK at Patches Quilt Loft, I had multiple labels made up on this multi-colored fabric.
Instead of fussing with borders and turned edges, I borrowed a technique used to sew a self-binding baby blanket. I cut the embroidered fabric to size, then cut a complementary fabric 1 1/2 inches larger.
The pins mark the center of each side of each piece of fabric. With right sides together, I line up the center points on all four sides and pin the two pieces together.
I sew around all four sides, leaving an opening on one side to flip the label right sides out. You’ll notice little “ears” poking out at each corner. This is where the magic happens.
I line up and flatten out the ears/corners, mark a line to make the miter, and stitch on the line.
When the label is flipped right sides out, it creates the miter in the corner. It’s magic!
I give the label a good press, and top stitch in the border to close the opening and stabilize the two fabrics.
Now I can hand stitch the label to the back of the quilt.
The finish is crisp, professional, and so much more satisfying than any label I’ve made before.
Now I just need to find time to bind, sleeve, and label four quilts before my guild’s show in October – wish me luck!
